But seriously, considering how effectively an airplane project can raise every penny, should you spend money on it? To find out, I recently spent a day reviewing the course at Velocity's home base in Sebastian, Florida. Let me give you the executive summary: The answer is yes. On the spectrum of aircraft handling characteristics, velocity is north of the challenge, but south of it is truly awkward. Training is a good idea.

Velocity CEO Duane Swing, who took over the company from Maher in 1992, says, "The main problem with trying to build a larger version of the Long-Z is the canard. But the Velocity was conceived as a four-place aircraft, with a more spacious cabin and two pilots in the front seats. "So now you've got two 250-pounders in the front seat and it becomes a really big problem," Swing said.

With no wheels or fins in the way, the Ingress is an easy plant-the-butt and swings the legs into the cockpit.

Maher tackled the noodle problem with another Long-Z builder, a NASA engineer, and after several iterations and wind tunnel tests, they settled on a large canard with a Fowler flap for the elevator control surface. "It's low, so when it turns down, it actually stretches the chord of the string.

"So the problem of lifting two 250-pounders in the front seat of the Velocity is solved," Swing explains.

However, it is very simple. Canards' theory of operation is that with pitch control at the front of the aircraft, the flying surface is first stabilized so that the main wing never reaches the stall angle of attack.

But some aircraft, even those with conventional control surfaces, have a deep stall mode, although it takes effort to find it. Basically, a deep stall is one where there is insufficient pitch authority (or thrust) to bring the wing below the stall angle of attack.

Swing likes to tell the story that during early development, test pilot Carl Pascarel put the plane into a deep stall from which he was unable to recover. As he was about to bail out, he realized that vertical speed was no faster than his parachute, so St. Augustine steered the plane into a splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean. The plane floated due to foam and was towed to shore, repaired and flown again. The pilot was not injured.

In effect, the solution is leading edge cuffs that lengthen the main wing chord and move the main wing stall angle 4 or 5 degrees away from the canard stall angle. Using constant speed props to change and provide more thrust eliminated the risk of deep stall, says Swing. But the plane has the unique flight characteristics of a pitch buck, which brings us to training.

Flight instructor Ingrid Meier, whose day job flies the airline's 737, runs the two-day Velocity School. It costs $1900 and involves five hours of groundwork and five flying landings. I will soon find out why.
